Technological Partnership Between TC TrustCenter and Totemo

Hamburg, Germany – October 1, 2007 – TrustCenter GmbH of Germany and Totemo AG of Switzerland are to cooperate more closely from now on: Hamburg-based TrustCenter and the Küsnacht-based software producer are entering a technology partnership that is intended to assist companies in sending signed and encrypted e-mail traffic. The centerpiece of the joint solution is the “Totemo TrustMail®” Secure Messaging Gateway in conjunction with digital certificates provided by the TC TrustCenter under its PKI (public key infrastructure) solutions “TC Enterprise ID” and “TC RootSigning“.

 

Companies can use the solutions of the TC TrustCenter and Totemo secure in the knowledge that their contacts with customers, partners and other business-related traffic by e-mail are fully protected. Often a company’s encrypted e-mail correspondence with third parties does not flow smoothly as the addressee does not have a certificate that is recognized by the gateway. Often addressees are reluctant to apply for a certificate that would enable the decryption of received emails – possibly because they fear high hidden costs. Totemo in partnership with TC TrustCenter has developed appropriate solutions for each of these scenarios.

 

Totemo TrustMail will be installed as the customer’s central gateway. The personal certificates of the designated employees are centrally stored at the gateway. To this end the TC TrustCenter creates personal certificates whose authenticity is recognized worldwide by means of two alternative solutions. Customers who do not wish to operate their own PKI solutions, can access trustworthy personal certificates via the managed PKI solution “TC Enterprise ID“ Customers who already have their own PKI solution or can access the CA functionalities of TrustMail, can ensure that these personal certificates are also recognized worldwide as authentic by means of the “TC RootSigning” product.

 

Employees can use these personal certificates to automatically sign and encrypt their outgoing emails via the gateway. For this purpose, Totemo provides the option of defining rules at the gateway that determine whether an e-mail is automatically encrypted. For example, certain groups of addressees or keywords such as “confidential” can be defined. Even though this increases the security level, no additional time is required.

 

The companies have already successfully implemented the first two joint projects: Both arvato systems, a subsidiary of arvato AG, the media and communication services arm of Bertelsmann AG, and the Swiss private bank LB (Swiss) encrypt their customer e-mail correspondence with Totemo TrustMail and digital certificates from TC TrustCenter.

 

“In addition to the e-mail encryption and the e-signature, we offer our customers the option of installing a virus scanner on the gateway. With this option, the incoming and outgoing e-mails are briefly decrypted at the gateway, scanned for digital infestation and then re-encypted before being forwarded to their ultimate destination,” says Dario Perfettibile, CEO of Totemo. “TC TrustCenter is also accredited with the Federal German Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) so that the certificate assures the highest possible degree of security. Thus we provide our customers with comprehensive protection for their e-mail traffic.”
